When Will Things Change? // Joanna Ward

This work is a graphic score, a text for interpretation by any number of performers. Ward’s primary practice is composing music, and this piece was inspired by feeling perpetually saddened and frustrated by the lack of women making new music. The simple line drawings and hand-written words and notes convey this visceral, embodied pain. The aesthetic delicacy and space invite the interpreter (whether in performance or in observation) to make the piece their own, and in doing so, to acknowledge and join the struggle for the recognition of diverse voices in the arts.
